Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Holy Week (this year April 5-7) are known as the “Sacred Triduum,” that is, the “holy three days.” The church’s services for the Sacred Triduum begin on Maundy Thursday with the observation of Our Lord and Savior’s passion, including His Last Supper, arrest, trials, flogging, crucifixion, and death. Traditionally this service has been seen as the first part of a continuuing service that includes Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. As we remember Jesus’ betrayal, sufferings, and death, we do so with a restrained joy. The mood is more somber and contemplative as we remember that on Maundy Thursday, the Lord of Life was in fact betrayed and abandoned not only by Judas and the disciples, but in fact by all of us by our own sin and failings. Yet there is also joy in knowing that our Lord endured all of this willingly in order to pay for our guilt and win our salvation.
