On Ascension Day, Thursday, May 17, you are invited to receive God’s good gifts with us, as we celebrate the divine service at 7:00 p.m. and rejoice that Jesus Christ has ascended above the heavens and now reigns for us at God’s right hand. The next day (Friday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m), you are invited to a special Vespers service within the octave of Ascension, to be held at Emmaus. The Vespers service will use the ancient manner of singing known as Gregorian Chant. All are welcome.

If you would like to sing, please bring The Brotherhood Prayer Book for use in the service. A limited number of copies will be on hand for purchase before the service.

Following the service on Friday you are invited to join us for Gemütlichkeit (conviviality) at one of St. Louis’s finest establishments.

Traditionally this service has been seen as the first part of a continuuing service that includes Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. As we remember Jesus’ betrayal, sufferings, and death, we do so with a restrained joy. The mood is more somber and contemplative as we remember that on Maundy Thursday, the Lord of Life was in fact betrayed and abandoned not only by Judas and the disciples, but in fact by all of us by our own sin and failings. Yet there is also joy in knowing that our Lord endured all of this willingly in order to pay for our guilt and win our salvation.

Emmaus received a generous gift from friends of the congregation this Christmas which allowed us to purchase new hymnals for our Sunday School and Bible Class opening. Please include in your prayers a petition of thanksgiving for this gift and for the many other families who supported  Emmaus in various ways this past year.

Volunteers Needed for Church Cleaning

Starting in 2012, the church cleaning will be done by Emmaus families who volunteer to take a month at a time. If you can participate in this rotation, please speak to Ben or Rebecca Mayes (rbmayes@gmail.com, 229-1134). Checklists, supplies and guidelines will all be provided. The time commitment should be no more than 5-7 hours a month if the tasks are shared by a family.

As we prepare to celebrate our LORD’s birth, please note that we have a number of things coming up on our schedule
This Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1:00, we will have private Confession and Absolution at the church
        at 1:30, we will decorate the church for Christmas.
Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 6:00 will be a soup supper at the School
        at 7:00 will be our last Advent midweek service at the church.
Saturday, Dec. 24 at 7:00 will be our Christmas Eve service
Sunday, Dec. 25 there will be NO Sunday School classes.
        At 10:15, we will sing Christmas carols in the church.
        At 10:30, we will have our Christmas day service.
Looking ahead, following our traditions here, there will be no New Year’s eve service, please attend one of our sister congregations.
