Class Descriptions

Grammar Level (Grades K-6) Classes:

Writing (Mrs. Barbara Szofran) – This class will use the exercise of writing as a means of teaching and reinforcing grammar for the students.  Writing assignments will use objects and topics being studied in history to help inspire the students to write.

Music (Mrs. Karen Rolland) – This will be a basic introduction to music class which will introduce the students to the basics of playing music using a variety of instruments and techniques.

Drama (Mrs. Cynthia Barger) – This class will introduce the students to the basics of acting with skits and other exercises.

History (Mrs. Denise Hellwege) – This will be a co-op style time of supplementing the history studies.  It will include memorization, crafts, hands on activities and other supplements.  Mothers will be asked to assist with leading portions of the classes.

Logic Level (Grades 6-9) Classes:

Drama (Mrs. Cynthia Barger) – This group will work together along with the Logic level students to put on a play each semester.  The plays will be based on subjects studied in history.  The first semester play will be on the Reformation and the second semester play will be based on the American Revolution.

History (Rev. Dr. John Hellwege) – This course will be based on the Tapestry of Grace, Year 2: Between Ancient and Modern curriculum.  Often studies of history focus on the basic events, people and dates of history, however, this course seeks to take the students into a deeper analysis of history.  The goal is to move the students into thinking about the interrelationship between the events, ideas and people throughout history.  This history course will include besides “traditional” history: church history, some basic history of philosophy as well as some art history.  This class will meet concurrently with the Rhetoric students for the discussion time.

Literature (Mrs. Barbara Szofran) – This class will be a study of some of the simpler Great Books and will be correlated with the time periods studied in the history course to give the students a understanding of the literary ideas of those times.  Studies will include not only the work of literature, but also understanding the author’s milieu and how the author sought to speak to his times.

Formal Logic (Rev. Dr. John Hellwege) – This course will be based on Traditional Logic Books I and II by Martin Cothran, published by Memoria Press.  In this course students will learn the basics of the ancient but often forgotten study of formal logic.  Secondarily, the students will also learn the basic informal logical fallacies with the goal of learning to recognize these when encountered in life.

Latin (Mr. Lyle Buettner) – This is an introductory Latin class for grades 3-6.

Hand Bell Choir (Mrs. Karen Rolland) – This is an introduction and training in hand bells, but also much more.  Not only will the students learn the playing of hand bells, including proper technique and exercises to prevent injury, but the class also includes basic music theory.  Previous hand bell experience helpful, but not required.

Rhetoric Level (Grades 9-12) Classes:

Drama (Mrs. Cynthia Barger) – This group will work together along with the Logic level students to put on a play each semester.  The plays will be based on subjects studied in history.  The first semester play will be on the Reformation and the second semester play will be based on the American Revolution.

History, Government, and Philosophy (Rev. Dr. John Hellwege) – This course will be based on the Tapestry of Grace, Year 2: Between Ancient and Modern curriculum.  This course is intended to bring the students to a deeper understanding of how history has moved along as a history of ideas as much as events and that the two are intertwined.  This will be a discussion based course, with the expectation that the students will have read all materials prior to class and will be ready to then delve into some of the deeper issues each week.  The class will have one hour devoted to history each week which will meet with the Logic level student for discussion. The second hour will then be devoted to government and or philosophy.  This portion will trace through many of the most influential thinkers of all time including St. Thomas Aquinas, René Descartes, and Immanuel Kant.  The whole class will earn 1 full credit in history, plus a half credit in government and a half credit in philosophy.

Literature (Mrs. Barbara Szofran) – This class will be a study of some of the Great Books during the time studied in the history course to give the students a understanding of the literary ideas of those times.  Studies will include not only the work of literature, but also understanding the author’s milieu and how the author sought to speak to his times.  There will be an emphasis on understanding the meaning of the text, as well as appreciating the author’s style.  Written assignments will include emulating a given author’s style.

Hand Bell Choir (Mrs. Karen Rolland) – Not only will the students learn the playing of hand bells, including proper technique and exercises to prevent injury, but the class also includes basic music theory.  Previous hand bell experience helpful, but not required.

Latin (Mr. Lyle Buettner) – This will be a high-school level Latin I class aimed at starting the students on the road to Latin mastery.  Previous Latin not required.
